Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

Image
By: Jonathan Chen Warning: spoilers. Shadow and Bone starts off with a very common trope of having superpowered people within a society. They are called Grisha. While this concept has been used over and over again, Shadow and Bone adds a twist by introducing a character called the Darkling. The Darkling is a powerful entity who controls shadows.  Within the book, there is a shadow fold that separates the coastline from the rest of the world. The main character, Alina, has been drafted to cross over, and that is where the plot begins. It turns out that the main character is the sun summoner, the only person in the world who can end the shadow fold. She is then sent to the place where grisha go to learn and there is essentially a lot of world building as the story progresses. Normally, I would be bored at the aspect of having a training montage, but the explanations for how the world works i.e. how grisha's powers work and slight political aspect keep it entertaining. The main...

Gemina, a pretty good sequel

Image
Gemina review, by Sahnan Haber CONTAINS MINOR SPOILERS FOR ILLUMINAE After reading and really liking Illuminae, I decided to read its sequel, Gemina. Like Illuminae, Gemina is written as a compilation of files, and is set in the same time period, and the same relative area. However, for the first major part of the book, there aren’t any of the same characters as in the first book, and there is little to no reference of the events that happened in Illuminae. Gemina starts around where Illuminae ended, and at the Heimdall Waypoint, which has the wormhole that the survivors of BeiTech’s attacks are trying to reach. At the start of the book, the residents and staff at the Heimdall Waypoint are preparing for a large holiday across the entire universe, Terra Day. During the chaos from preparing for Terra Day, a squad of 24 BeiTech soldiers are smuggled into the Heimdall space station before they kill the commander and take control of the wormhole so as to not let the survivors escape an...

Thoughts and Review of Chlorine Sky

Image
Chlorine Sky is a book that is written like a poem on every page. All of the poems are free-verse and they connect together to tell a story that the protagonist, Skyy, struggles to go through.  SPOILERS INCOMING . In Chlorine Sky, Skyy talks about her friend Lay Li. Skyy mentions how Lay Li is this big popular star in her school and describes herself as “the friend of the star”. Lay Li starts to get mad at Skyy when Skyy calls her boyfriend named Shawn and immediately goes to the assumption that Skyy was trying to break them up. Lay Li avoids Sky from this point on and that’s when we start to meet other people in Skyy’s life. We get introduced to Skyy’s cousin, Inga, and her sister, Essa. Skyy details how Essa hates her and they always get into a fight or argument about nothing. She also creates a connection between Essa and Lay Li saying how they are both alike. Inga stops them from fighting since she is the oldest that has the most authority over the two of them. Because S...
